Microsoft is purchasing Activision Blizzard for a reported $68.7 billion. XBOX announced this monumental purchase on the morning of January 18th, 2022. As part of this purchase, Microsoft will own the rights to all products produced by Activision Blizzard and their subsidiaries.
XBOX will soon own Call of Duty, Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and other popular titles developed by Activision Blizzard. This acquisition opens the door for future collaborations between titles. Additionally, fans and players have raised questions regarding the future of their favorite titles.
XBOX has confirmed that they will offer many Activision Blizzard titles on XBOX and PC Game Pass. XBOX has also stated that this acquisition will expedite their plans for Cloud Gaming. Cloud Gaming will allow players to game across many different mobile platforms in addition to console.
This process is both long and strenuous; the deal is far from closed. It is likely this deal will be looked at to ensure it does not create a monopoly in the industry. Further, as revealed in an email sent by Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, the deal is expected to close “sometime in Microsoft’s fiscal 2023 year ending June 30, 2023”. Until the deal closes, Activision Blizzard will continue to run as an independent company.
Confirmed by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, all Activision Blizzard companies will report to him after the deal closes. This begs questions of leadership at Activision Blizzard however no answers have been provided at this time.
